I would also like to use this show to raise money for a Music teacher for the slum kids of Aziza’s Place in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. My friend Peter has been working with a program in Cambodia trying to save 2,000 years of music from vanishing. The story of the Cambodian people is sad, but your inspired by their outlook on life and how much they smile and laugh. In short imagine performing at the Apollo Theatre in Harlem on talent night, half way through your act the crowd boo’s at you, instead of being helped off the stage you are shot, bang gone! Sounds extreme I know, well this is what cambodian artists endured during the Khmer Rouge in the 70′s and 80′s. Many Artists vanished into the jungle and became farmers, the lucky few that survived were allowed to live and sing Propaganda songs for the rouge. Over 90% of all artistic and educated people were killed.
20 years later CLA was started by Arn Chorn-Pond, a Cambodian-American refugee who was featured in the Emmy-nominated movie, The Flute Player. It went out and found the surviving Masters and has created a studio and workshop to get them back to music and teaching. CLA empowers it’s art students and masters to develop performance skills and social networks that will help them to make a living through the arts. Many of these Masters live in the Slums of Phnom Penh.
Aziza’s Place opened its doors in February 2007. The colorful building, located in the capital city of Phnom Penh, is both home and learning center to more than twenty Cambodian children between the ages of 7 and 17. These children come from the city’s slums and the municipal
dumpsite of Stung Meanchey.
The staff and volunteers at Aziza’s Place assist the children to work toward self-determination within a safe environment, providing developmental programs focused on health, language, literacy, mathematics, life skills, visual arts and music.
The last song on the podcast is Tummonh Neang Sere Moha Maya, it is performed at funerals. Master Prum Ut a teacher and the male voice in the song just passed away. We are so glad to have this recording of the performance of the song. to support CLA buy the song.
